With breathable fabrics, quicker drying times, and less waste (and smell!) in your bin, reusable nappies offer plenty of advantages during the warmer months. Whether you’re at home, out and about, or heading off on holiday, there are lots of reasons why reusable nappies are a great choice for summer.
Breathable fabrics against baby’s skin: Natural materials like cotton, bamboo or hemp are more breathable and promote air circulation, keeping your baby cooler. These materials are often used in the absorbent inner layers of reusable nappies and are gentle on sensitive skin. Reusable nappies come in a few different styles, and each one offers options for keeping your baby comfortable during the summer:
- A two-part nappy system includes an absorbent nappy (like a cotton prefold or fitted nappy) paired with a separate waterproof wrap (made of PUL). This setup is highly breathable especially if you’re using natural fibres. Wool wraps are also a fantastic option in summer. They are breathable, temperature-regulating, and made from natural fibres when treated with lanolin becomes naturally water-resistant. Wool might sound like a winter fabric, but it actually helps keep babies cool in warm weather too.
- An all-in-one or pocket nappy (one size nappy system) combines the absorbent inner and waterproof outer in one piece. In warmer weather, you can use lighter inserts to reduce bulk and help keep your baby cool. All-in-one or pocket nappies typically include a synthetic “stay-dry” lining, which helps wick moisture away from the skin – useful for keeping your baby feeling dry, even in the heat.
Both nappy systems can be adapted for summer – it’s all about using breathable materials and adjusting layers based on the temperature and your baby’s needs. Scroll down for more information on fabrics, and for a recap on the different nappy types, visit: what are reusable nappies.
Faster drying times: warm weather will mean nappies dry faster. Sunlight can naturally sanitise nappies and can help to remove stains. Hanging outdoors or indoors by a sunny window works. Tip: make sure the absorbent inserts for all-in-one or pocket nappies are inside-out for quicker drying.
Less waste in your bin: using reusable nappies will mean less waste and no smelly disposable nappies sitting in the heat. This can be especially helpful if your household waste is collected every two weeks!
Comfortable fit: change nappies frequently to prevent prolonged exposure to moisture. A well fitted nappy allows air to circulate and prevents unnecessary compression. Check the nappy isn’t too tight around your baby’s thighs or waist.
Nappy-free time: warm weather is the perfect time for nappy-free play. Whether in the garden, at the beach, or indoors on a washable mat, giving your baby time out of nappies can help their skin breathe and may gently support their awareness of when they need to go, which can be a helpful part of the journey towards toilet training.
Day trips and holidays made easy: using reusable nappies when out and about or on holiday can be just as easy as using them at home. Make sure to pack enough nappies for the day or your trip. For longer holiday’s, check there are laundry facilities available. Bring a wet-bag for used ones and bring along reusable wipes – perfect for messy hands and faces too! Water play and swimming: skip the disposable swim nappies. Reusable swim nappies are soft, washable and just as effective. They’re also far more stylish! If you’re taking your baby to a swim class, such as Water Babies, they usually recommend a neoprene outer layer over the swim nappy, for example the Happy Nappy Swim Pant. Frequently Asked Questions (Summer Edition):
Will my baby overheat in reusables? No. If you are using a two-part nappy system like a prefold or fitted nappy, use breathable waterproof wraps or go wrap-free when you’re at home. If using a pocket nappy use lighter inserts like bamboo. Dress your baby in loose, light clothes – or just a nappy!
What’s the difference between natural and synthetic fabrics in reusable nappies? Reusable nappies can be made from a mix of natural and synthetic fabrics, each with different benefits:
- Natural fibres like cotton, bamboo, or hemp are breathable, gentle on skin, and great for warm weather. They let air circulate, helping to keep your baby cool and comfortable.
- Synthetic fabrics, like polyester or microfibre, are lightweight and dry quickly. They’re often used in nappies designed for convenience, such as all-in-ones or pocket nappies.
Some brands combine both. For example:
- The Mother-ease Wizard Uno Staydry Nappy uses a specially designed polyester fabric that keeps baby’s skin dry and cool, thanks to a clever cooling yarn woven in.
- The Bambino Mio Revolutionary Nappy uses polyester for fast drying and bamboo in the booster for added absorbency and leak protection.
Both natural and synthetic fabrics can work well. It’s all about what fits your routine, drying space, and baby’s needs.
Do reusable nappies smell in the summer? No. Not if they’re stored properly and washed regularly. Use a breathable wet bag or bucket with a lid to store used nappies and wash every 2 to 3 days.
What if I don’t have outdoor space to dry nappies? No problem, reusable nappies can be dried indoors near a window or on an airer with good air circulation. Warm weather helps speed things up, even inside.
How many reusable nappies should I pack for a day out? This depends on your baby’s age and how long you’ll be out. For a full day, we recommend 4 – 6 nappies, a wet bag for storing used ones, and reusable wipes.
Are reusable swim nappies really effective? Yes! Reusable swim nappies are designed with a snug fit to contain solid poo while allowing urine to pass through – which is perfectly safe, as ‘urine in the pool is not a problem because the chlorine will kill any pathogens which may be present in it’ (Water Babies 2024). In short, reusable swim nappies are easy to use. Remove any solids, rinse after use and wash at 30 degrees in the machine as required. Air-line dry and then reuse.
