As part of this year’s Green Libraries Week, we visited the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) class in Tower Hamlets to deliver a special awareness session on reusable nappies. The session helped learners build their English skills while exploring an important eco-friendly alternative to disposable nappies.
A Hands-On Learning Session
During the visit, students had the chance to:
- See and handle different types of reusable nappies.
- Learn how they work and how to use liners and fastenings.
- Discuss washing routines and how to care for reusable nappies.
- Ask questions about cost, comfort and environmental impact.
The practical demonstration helped learners understand the topic clearly and practice new vocabulary related to babies, daily routines and sustainable choices.
Why Reusable Nappies?
Reusable nappies reduce the huge amount of waste created by disposables every year. For parents, the impact of disposable nappies quickly adds up. In the UK, an estimated 3.6 billion nappies are thrown away each year, costing Local Authorities over £140 million per annum for collection and disposal.
Choosing reusable nappies is a simple way families can cut down on waste while saving money and supporting a healthier planet for their children. They can be washed and used many times, making them better for the environment and often more affordable in the long run. Many students were surprised to learn how modern reusable nappies are designed for comfort, convenience, and style.
Supporting Language Learning Through Green Topics
This workshop linked environmental awareness with language development. Students practiced listening, speaking and reading while discussing real-life choices that affect families and the planet. For many, it was their first time learning about reusable nappies, and the topic sparked lively conversation.
