Switch for Six 2017: Week 1 Diary Entry from Amii, Waltham Forest

“A week ago, we decided to take the plunge back into the wonderful world of cloth nappies. I had used them for nearly two years with my 2 year old daughter, but we had switched back to disposables with the arrival of our second daughter. A temporary measure, designed to give us the space to get used to having two, somehow seemed to become permanent. Real Nappy Week and the challenge of the Switch for Six campaign provided the motivation I needed to try again.

It has been a rollercoaster week though. Lots of highs, lots of lows and a few leaks for good measure. I started by looking for Real Nappy Week deals and sharing them far and wide. Even though I wasn’t using cloth myself at the time, I still wanted to encourage as many people as possible to make the switch too. It just didn’t feel like I was doing enough.

By Tuesday, I had gotten all of our cloth nappies out of storage and started the real journey back by stripping my inserts of any old detergent build up. I’ve found the easiest way to do this is to soak them in cold water in the bath overnight. Then hung them out the next day to dry.

The rest of the week was spent working out sizes and trying to get back into the cloth nappy routine. We use gNappies exclusively, which come in small, medium, large and xl sizes. My toddler had finally outgrown the medium covers, so working out she needed to go into larges was easy. My 3 month old was not as simple. First we tried smalls, but they were too small. Mediums, on the other hand, were too big. They both produced leaks. For now, the safest option for out and about is disposables. We just need a little more time to find the right fit.”
