Why Switch to Reusable Nappies

In the first 2.5 years of a baby’s life, they will have gone through at least 4,000 nappy changes. In London, the majority of these nappy changes will be of the single-use variety and thrown away to be incinerated. Parents choose to use reusable nappies for three main reasons:

Better for Baby

Breathable soft natural fabrics, which are comfortable and gentle on your baby’s skin.

Reduce Waste

By using just one reusable nappy a day instead of a disposable nappy, you will save 912 disposable nappies from incineration.

Save Money

Using reusable nappies full time can save you on average £195 per year. Further savings can be made if the same nappies are used on a second child.

What are reusable nappies and how to get started

Choose to Reuse

Reusable nappies will save you waste, save you money, and are easy to use, wash and dry because of their modern designs. They come in three main types: All-in-One, Shaped and Flat. Find out more about the different types of reusable nappies and what else you may need.

“Reuse for a day, don’t throw it away!”

On our get started page, we offer tips and advice on what you need to get started, how to wash and dry reusable nappies, and where to you can buy them. For every day you use reusable nappies, you will not only reduce waste but consume less single-use plastic equivalent to seven plastic bags a day.

Reusable Nappy Pack Scheme

Apply for a reusable nappy pack to help you get started

Havering Council is currently offering free sample nappy packs available to Havering parents/parents-to-be/carers with children less than 18 months old (limited to one pack per child). The pack contains everything you need for trying out two different types of cloth nappies, and include:

  • 1 x pocket nappy with two bamboo booster pads
  • 1 x all-in-one nappy
  • 1 x pack nappy liners (100 liners per pack)
  • 2 x washable cotton cheeky wipes

Both nappies are ‘Birth to Potty’ nappies so can be used from birth although they fit much better on a baby of around 3 months and will expand with your growing baby until they are ready to change to regular underwear.

NOTE: This reusable nappy pack is administered by the London Borough of Havering, not Real Nappies for London.

Havering Reusable Nappy Champions Network

Inspire your community to learn more about using reusable nappies. Volunteer as a Reusable Nappy Champion.

By becoming a Reusable Nappy Champion you will be part of a local support network, helping other parents/carers learn about reusable nappies. You will arrange informal meetup’s to show and tell different types of reusable nappies, how to use, wash and dry them as well as sharing your experiences along the way. These events can be online or in-person (Covid safe). You’ll be part of the reuse revolution encouraging and informing your local community helping more families choose to reuse. Get in touch with Havering Council directly to find out more.
