Sustainability
An Environment Agency report published in May 2005 said that disposable nappies were no worse for the environment than cloth nappies. But a barely publicized update released in October 2008 said that if cloth nappies were used sensibly (ie not boiled, tumble-dried and ironed), they could be 40% better for the environment than throwaway nappies. Both reports excluded land use from their studies.So-called eco-friendly disposables or bio-degradable single-use nappies don't tend to break down in landfill. The manufacturing, packaging and transport impacts are similar to mainstream disposables.
Cloth nappies can be washed using low impact detergents or wash balls on low temperatures. Air-drying is better than tumble-drying to save carbon.
A major benefit of washable nappies is they make us more capable. If you use too much detergent on nappies they become hard and stop being absorbent. This is due to detergent residues www.bummis.com.
Washing nappies makes us more aware of the impacts of all our laundry: towels, sheets and clothes. It's not washing per se that damages bio-diversity, it is polluting the water with too many harsh chemicals.
