Flat nappies tend to be made of cotton - so breathable. They are also economic, durable and versatile.
These include traditional terries, muslins and pre-folds. They need some
folding
and a waterproof cover (wrap).
No pins are needed if you use a little plastic gripper or fitted wraps. Pre-folds are popular. A waterproof wrap over the top holds the nappy in place and keeps the clothes clean and dry.
Watch a video on how to use a pre-fold
Cost:
from around £3 a nappyAdvantages:
- very durable & can be used on more than one baby
- very absorbent
- quickest to dry
- available in fair-trade organic cotton
- versatile - fold in different ways to suit baby’s needs, e.g. for increased absorbency at night.
Disadvantages:
- 2 sizes needed for birth to potty (but if you start using them when your baby is 6 months you may only need the bigger size)
Wraps
A waterproof wrap is worn over flat or shaped nappies.
Soft, durable and breathable, most are machine washable. Cost:
from about £9.Liners
Biodegradable (flushable) paper liners or washable (cotton, silk and fleece) liners can be placed inside nappies to catch the poo. After changing the nappy simply remove and flush the contents down the lavatory. If only wet and not soiled, some biodegradable liners can even be washed for reuse. Biodegradable liners are around £3 for 100, and washable liners from around £3 each.To find out what parents say visit our blog
